The Best Time for Turfing
While turf can technically be laid year-round in the UK, certain seasons give you the best chance of a healthy, established lawn.
Optimal Seasons
Autumn (September-November): Best Choice
- Soil is still warm from summer
- Increased rainfall reduces watering needs
- Less competition from weeds
- Roots establish before winter dormancy
Spring (March-May): Excellent
- Rising temperatures encourage growth
- Good rainfall typically
- Long growing season ahead
- Ground workable after winter
Seasons to Approach with Care
Summer (June-August): Possible with Caution
- Requires intensive watering (daily or twice daily)
- Hot spells can stress new turf
- Higher risk of failure without proper care
- More expensive due to water usage
Winter (December-February): Limited
- Ground may be frozen or waterlogged
- Grass is dormant so no root growth
- Can damage turf during laying
- Best avoided unless essential
Tips for Successful Turfing
Ground preparation is key:
- Remove all weeds and old grass
- Dig over and improve soil with compost
- Level thoroughly with a rake
- Firm with a roller or feet
After laying:
- Water immediately and thoroughly
- Keep off the lawn for 2-3 weeks
- Water daily in dry weather
- First cut when grass reaches 5cm
