Case Study
A tired rear garden reworked into a low-maintenance space: a smooth resin bound gravel surface laid throughout, new timber sleeper raised beds built around the edges and a fresh artificial lawn. Block paving to the front garden is currently under way.
Resin bound gravel lets rainwater soak straight through instead of running off, so there are no puddles and no loose stones to sweep up. The inspection cover was set level with the surface so the drain stays accessible without breaking up the finish.
The sleepers hold the soil clear of the new surface and lift the planting to a height that is easier to work at, while giving the edges of the garden a defined shape.
An enclosed garden between two walls gets limited sun, which is where real turf tends to thin out and turn muddy. The artificial lawn stays green and usable through the winter with no mowing.
The front is being dug out and prepared now, and we will add the finished photos here as soon as the paving is complete.

Case Study
A scorched, patchy lawn that had thinned down to bare soil was stripped out and replaced with a hard-wearing artificial grass lawn. The existing sandstone paving, pebble borders and pergola seating area were all kept, so the work stayed focused on the one part of the garden that was failing.
The turf had burnt off over the summer and worn through to bare earth in the busiest spots. Artificial grass laid straight over the top of that would telegraph every hump and hollow, so the old lawn was cut out and carted away first.
The soil was taken down to a consistent depth and the base worked level across the whole area. This is the stage that decides whether the finished lawn looks flat or shows every dip underneath it, and it is the reason the surface reads as one clean plane in the final photos.
The lawn meets the sandstone on a long diagonal, which is the hardest kind of edge to cut cleanly. Trimming it tight to the paving avoids the gaps and lifting edges that make an artificial lawn look like a carpet dropped on top of the garden.
The paving and seating area were in good order, so there was no reason to price up replacing them. Spending the budget only on the part that had failed is usually the difference between a garden that gets sorted this year and one that waits.

Case Study
A shaped artificial grass lawn set out with a sweeping curve, held on all sides by brick edging and framed with pale gravel borders. The existing sandstone patio, pergola and established rose planting were all kept, with the new lawn built to work around them.
The shape was pegged out and built before any grass went down, using brick edging with timber battens holding the line while it set. A flowing curve like this only looks right if the edge is formed properly at this stage, because the grass simply follows whatever line it is cut against.
The area was dug out and filled with crushed stone, then compacted down with a plate before the grass was laid. Skipping this is what causes an artificial lawn to develop soft spots and dips a year or two later.
The lawn is contained by a solid edge the whole way round rather than finishing into soil or gravel. That is what stops the perimeter lifting or fraying, which is usually the first thing to go wrong on an artificial lawn.
The pale gravel gives the roses and shrubs their own margin and keeps soil and mulch off the grass. It also means rain draining off the lawn has somewhere to go instead of washing debris across the surface.
The paving and planting were in good condition, so the new lawn was shaped to fit them rather than the other way round. Keeping mature roses is worth designing around, since they take years to establish.

Case Study
A tired rear garden dug out back to bare soil and rebuilt as a full-width artificial grass lawn, running edge to edge between the existing pale paving and the boundary fence. The result is a clean, usable surface for a family with young children and no mowing to keep on top of.
The whole lawn area was stripped and taken down to soil, then worked level across its full width. Getting this flat at the dig-out stage is what stops the finished lawn showing dips, because artificial grass follows the ground underneath it exactly.
Timber battens were run around the edges to fix the shape and hold the levels while the base was built up. It means the grass has a firm, straight line to be cut and fixed against rather than finishing loose into soil.
The rolls were brought in and allowed to sit before being cut in, which lets the backing relax and settle. Fitting straight off a tightly wound roll is what leaves creases and ripples that never fully disappear.
The grass finishes flush against the existing pale paving rather than leaving a gap or a lip, so there is nothing to trip on and nothing for the edge to catch and lift on. The manhole cover in the paving was left fully accessible.
There is no bare mud to be walked back into the house and no seasonal patchiness, so the garden stays usable through winter. For a family garden that gets heavy use in the same spots, that is usually the main reason for going artificial.

Case Study
A heavily overgrown garden with collapsed old fence panels was fully cleared, stripped back and rebuilt with new closeboard fencing and a fresh path, ready for the family to enjoy.
Everything came off site in one go, including the broken panels and buried rubble, so the garden was left as a genuinely clean slate rather than with piles waiting to be dealt with.
Concrete posts were used because timber posts rot at ground level, which is exactly why the old fence had collapsed. The closeboard panels are far heavier than standard lap panels and hold up much better to wind.
Levelling out the humps and hollows made the space usable again, and the path gives a firm, dry route down the garden in winter instead of walking through mud.

Case Study
An overgrown garden with a cracked concrete path and failing fence panels was cleared, dug out and rebuilt from the ground up. The finished space is a full-length Kandla grey Indian sandstone patio with slate gravel borders and new closeboard fencing on both boundaries.
The existing path had cracked and sunk, so it was broken out rather than covered over. Paving laid on top of failing concrete simply follows it as it moves, which is why the whole lot came up first.
This is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a patio lasts. The ground was dug out to depth and the hardcore compacted in layers, so the slabs bed onto something solid instead of soft soil that settles unevenly.
Kandla grey is a riven natural stone, so every slab varies slightly in tone and texture and the random pattern lets that read as intentional. The surface was laid with a gentle fall away from the house so rain runs off rather than sitting in pools.
The slate channels run-off away from the fence line and give the stone a clean margin to finish against, which avoids the ragged cut slabs you get when paving is butted straight up to a boundary.
The old panels were rotten and leaning, so replacing them was part of the job rather than an extra. New closeboard fencing frames the patio and makes the finished garden feel properly enclosed.

Case Study
A tired family garden with worn paving and patchy lawn transformed into a bright, practical space with porcelain patio, timber sleeper edging, fresh turf and newly painted fencing.
Porcelain is dense and barely absorbs water, so it resists frost damage and staining and does not fade in the way the old slabs had. A quick wash is usually all it needs.
The sleepers hold the planting soil back off the paving and give the lawn a firm edge, so the borders stay where they should instead of creeping onto the patio.
New turf went down on properly prepared soil so it roots quickly, and the fence paint seals the timber against the weather while tying the whole garden together.

Case Study
A tired, uneven side return was cleared, prepared and finished with fresh gravel and smart timber fencing to create a cleaner, more usable access route.
Digging out the soft, uneven ground first is what stops a gravel path rutting and sinking later. Getting the levels right also sends rainwater away from the house rather than towards it.
The membrane blocks weeds coming up from below and keeps the gravel from working its way down into the soil, so the path stays at an even depth instead of thinning out in the middle.
A straight, properly set fence line makes a narrow side return feel wider and more purposeful, and it clearly marks where the boundary sits.
