The New Build Garden Challenge
Bought a new build? Chances are your garden is a patch of compacted soil, some basic turf, and a standard fence. The good news: it is a blank canvas ready for transformation.
Common New Build Garden Problems
Poor soil:
Builders often leave subsoil on top after construction. It compacts easily and drains poorly. Before doing anything else, assess your soil.
Basic fencing:
Standard builder's fencing is functional but rarely attractive. It is also often the minimum height (1.5-1.8m).
No real design:
New build gardens are typically rectangular with no thought to layout, zones, or how you will actually use the space.
Drainage issues:
Compacted ground and new construction can create drainage problems. Watch how water behaves after heavy rain.
First Steps
Wait and watch:
If you have just moved in, give it a season. See how the sun moves, where water collects, and how you naturally want to use the space.
Fix the soil:
Before any planting, improve the soil with plenty of organic matter. It is hard to fix this later.
Address drainage:
If water pools, deal with it now. A French drain or soakaway is much easier to install before paving and planting.
Design Ideas for New Builds
The classic layout:
Patio adjacent to the house, central lawn, planted borders around the edges. Works for most rectangular plots and suits family use.
Low maintenance contemporary:
Porcelain paving, artificial lawn, composite fencing, architectural planting. Minimal upkeep, maximum style.
Zoned garden:
Divide the space into distinct areas: dining terrace, lawn for children, planted retreat at the bottom. Makes the garden feel larger and more interesting.
Side return extension:
If you have access down the side of the house, consider extending your usable garden space with paving or decking.
Popular Upgrades
Fencing upgrade:
Replace builder's panels with composite fencing (in darker colours like anthracite) for an instant contemporary lift.
Proper patio:
A decent-sized porcelain or natural stone patio transforms how you use the garden. Aim for at least 3x4 metres for table and chairs.
Artificial lawn:
Perfect for new builds where real grass struggles on poor soil. Always green, no maintenance.
Garden lighting:
New builds rarely include outdoor lighting. Add it from the start and enjoy your garden in the evening.
